The largest member of the deer family in Utah, at home where northern mountain forest meets water.
Moose are the largest member of the deer family in Utah. Adults can weigh 800 to 1,200 pounds, bulls can stand 6 feet at the shoulder, and only bulls have antlers. They live in the mountains of northern and northeastern Utah, including urban areas along the Wasatch Front.
Moose prefer forest mixed with open ground near lakes or wetlands. They swim well, feed in marshes and streams on water plants and new woody growth in spring and summer, and switch to bark and twigs in winter. Some make short moves between summer and winter range.
Moose can be dangerous when they feel threatened, and bulls can be especially aggressive in the fall breeding season. Warning signs include raised hair on the neck, snout licking and ears laid back. Keep dogs away: moose can be very aggressive around them, and Utah law bars letting dogs chase or harass wildlife. If a moose charges, get behind something solid, like a tree.
