Elwood’s municipal history follows a farming community between the Bear and Malad rivers, known at different times as Fairview and Manila before becoming Elwood. Canal construction, drainage work and agricultural production all shaped its development. The town’s account describes families living on individual farms rather than around a single compact village center.
Community effort also shaped Hansen Park, whose construction began in 1982 with substantial volunteer labor. The town preserves another link with its schools through the old school bell near town hall.
