Legal education and prosecution
Sim Gill earned a bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy at the University of Utah. He completed his law degree and specialized environmental and natural-resources law study at Lewis & Clark’s Northwestern School of Law in Portland. A prosecutor before his countywide election, he became Salt Lake County district attorney following the November 2010 election. [1]
Therapeutic justice experience
Gill’s official biography describes work on Mental Health Court, Veterans Court, domestic-violence court, misdemeanor drug court and the Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center. He favors a systems approach that brings legal agencies and community partners together. Those projects connect his prosecution responsibilities with efforts to address underlying needs, support survivors and provide alternatives for appropriate participants. [1]
Mental-health policy in 2026
In May 2026, Gill joined advocates and families at an event accompanying his office’s second symposium on criminal justice and mental health. He discussed gaps in treatment systems that leave police and prosecutors responding to crises. The office’s account also describes his emphasis on including families in policy discussions and improving access to treatment before criminal-justice involvement. [2]
Courts and diversion partnerships
At the same event, Gill discussed Mental Health Court and county partnerships through the Leifman Project. His office reported participant data concerning reduced jail use and repeat justice-system involvement, while describing ongoing efforts to divert people toward treatment. The event illustrates how therapeutic justice remains part of his current public agenda, alongside the prosecution and community-collaboration work in his biography. [2]
