Policing and command experience

Rosie Rivera began her law-enforcement career in 1993 and advanced through officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant and deputy-chief positions before becoming sheriff. Her work has included patrol, community policing, gang investigations, narcotics, administration and public information. She was sworn in as Salt Lake County sheriff on August 15, 2017, and became Utah’s first woman elected to a sheriff’s office. [1]

Jail and justice-system work

Rivera’s official biography describes oversight of jail and court-security operations and participation in criminal-justice, gang and narcotics coordination groups. She has also served with the county opioid task force and Family Justice Center advisory board. Her work with domestic-violence survivors and mentoring of gang-involved young people adds prevention and victim support to her policing and corrections experience. [1]

Treatment and alternatives to custody

Rivera’s biography identifies alternatives to incarceration, drug treatment and mental-health care as priorities. It describes bringing medication-assisted treatment into the jail and supporting pretrial-release programs. She also emphasizes transparency and fiscal responsibility in budgeting. Those are the approaches her office highlights in addressing jail pressures and the connection between law enforcement, treatment and community services. [1]

Winter-road safety partnership

In January 2026, Rivera’s office announced a partnership with UDOT and the county’s regional-development office for free tire inspections and traction-law stickers. The initiative aimed to improve vehicle readiness before travel in the Cottonwood Canyons. The announcement describes education and preparation as tools for reducing preventable winter crashes and traffic disruption, providing a specific example of interagency community-safety work. [2]
