Music before law

Kirk A. Cullimore's route to the Legislature began with music. His official Senate biography records an associate degree in music from Utah Valley University and a bachelor's degree in music from Brigham Young University. He taught music and managed a studio for six years before earning a law degree at the University of Oklahoma. The biography also describes a mission in the Philippines before completing his bachelor's degree. [1]

Legal practice and community ties

Cullimore practiced Federal Indian Law in Oklahoma before returning to Utah. The Senate biography describes his Utah firm as working in business law, land use, water development and technology. His civic background includes Suzuki music organizations, a school community council and government-affairs work for the Utah Apartment Association. Those affiliations provide professional context without establishing his position on a particular development or landlord-tenant dispute. [1]

Senate majority leader

First elected to the Senate in 2018, Cullimore represents District 19, encompassing southeastern Salt Lake County and parts of northeastern Utah County. His current official biography identifies him as majority leader. That title describes caucus leadership in addition to his district seat. It should be distinguished from earlier references to him as majority whip or to Evan Vickers as majority leader. [1]

In the 2026 General Session, Kirk A. Cullimore was chief sponsor of S.B. 113, Medical Prescription Amendments. It would have allowed a prescription for Schedule V substances to stay valid for up to two years. It never reached a Senate floor vote: it went back to the Rules Committee without being considered, and it was filed on March 6, 2026. [3]

In the 2026 General Session, Kirk A. Cullimore was chief sponsor of S.B. 114, Controlled Substances Amendments. It would have automatically rescheduled a type of psilocybin under state law if the federal government reschedules it. It never reached a floor vote: a committee sent it back to the Rules Committee, and it was filed on March 6, 2026. [4]

Business, budgets and oversight

The official roster lists Cullimore on Executive Appropriations and the Business and Labor, Judiciary/Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice, and Revenue and Taxation committees. It also includes the Revitalization Zone Committee and Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Coordination Committee. These records connect his legal and development background with a broad legislative portfolio. Disclosures, bill sponsorship and recorded votes remain the relevant documents for examining a specific financial interest or policy decision. [2]
