Law, language and government communications
Ken Ivory earned a Japanese degree at Brigham Young University and a law degree at California Western School of Law. His official House biography describes legal work in business, estate planning and government communications. It also identifies him as author of Where's the Line? How States Protect the Constitution, providing background on the state-federal questions associated with his public career. [2]
A legislative career with a break
Ivory first entered the House in 2011, resigned in 2019 and returned after delegates selected him to fill a vacancy in November 2021, according to contemporaneous Salt Lake Tribune reporting. The roster's 2011 start date should therefore not be read as uninterrupted service. The 2021 selection concerned the district boundaries then in use, rather than the current House map. [1]
District 39 and current policy assignments
Ivory now represents House District 39 in Salt Lake County. His House biography identifies portions of West Jordan, Sandy, South Jordan, Midvale and Murray within the district. Current standing assignments include House Business, Labor, and Commerce and House Transportation. Those committees place commercial regulation and transportation policy in his portfolio alongside the constitutional and federalism subjects described in his professional biography. [2]
In the 2026 General Session, Ken Ivory was chief sponsor of H.B. 195, Precious Metals Amendments. It extends the state treasurer's precious metals study by two years, directs the treasurer to seek proposals for a precious metals-backed electronic payment system, sets requirements for that system and calls for annual reports to the Revenue and Taxation Interim Committee. It became law without the governor's signature on March 26, 2026. [3]
In the 2026 General Session, Ken Ivory was chief sponsor of H.B. 317, Social Health in Public Education Curriculum. It would have added instruction in social health to the required health curriculum in public schools. It did not become law, and it was filed on March 6, 2026. [4]
Infrastructure funding and federalism
His current record lists Transportation and Infrastructure Appropriations, the Federalism Commission and interim work in business and labor and transportation. The commission assignment provides an institutional connection to questions of state and federal authority. His budget role concerns infrastructure spending, a separate responsibility from the legal practice and writing described in his biography and from the earlier resignation and return documented in reporting.
