Finance and a career change

Jimmie Hughes grew up in St. George and graduated from Dixie High School. His early career included real estate appraisal and mortgage lending in Southern California, Salt Lake City and St. George over twelve years. He later returned to school for an associate degree in applied funeral sciences and became an owner of Hughes Mortuary. [1]

Professional service

The mortuary’s staff biography identifies Jimmie and Tawny Hughes as the owners and describes their work with families experiencing bereavement. It places their business within longstanding ties to Southern Utah and an emphasis on personal assistance during loss. This is the business’s account of his professional background, distinct from the elected responsibilities he later assumed at City Hall. [2]

Council and mayoral experience

Hughes began serving on the St. George City Council in 2012 and remained on the council until his election as mayor in 2025. The city lists his mayoral term as ending in January 2030. His official biography identifies assignments involving the Housing Authority, Local Homeless Coordinating Committee, Friends of Switchpoint, solid waste, regional transportation and flood control. [1]

Community connection and public space

In his 2026 mayoral messages, Hughes emphasizes community gatherings and the role of civic spaces in connecting residents. He points to the new City Hall and its relationship with Historic Town Square as places for interaction with local government. His messages also discuss arts, recreation and heritage events. These communications describe community activities and shared city investments, alongside the mayor’s individual responsibility to represent residents and explain municipal priorities. [1]
