Grant Amjad Miller is a public defender whose work includes representing people appointed counsel by the courts. His House caucus biography records graduation from the University of Utah's law school in 2017, student-bar leadership and extensive pro bono and expungement work. Before law, he worked as a professional trombonist, including touring and studio performances, giving his career a background in both music and legal service. [3]
Public service and district
Miller began House service in January 2025 and represents District 24 in Salt Lake County. His official education record includes Snow College and the University of Utah. Documented legislative work
His 2026 sponsor record includes HB94, Criminal Accounts Receivable Amendments, and HB53, Community Rehabilitation Program Amendments, both listed as signed by the governor. Other proposals dealing with pleas held in abeyance, marijuana penalties and presumptions of indigency ended as filed in the House. The combination identifies a justice-system focus consistent with his legal background, without presenting unsuccessful proposals as changes already made to Utah law. [2]
In the 2026 General Session, Grant Amjad Miller was chief sponsor of H.B. 91, Presumption of Indigency Amendments. It would have required a court to presume that anyone jailed for at least 10 consecutive days is indigent. It never reached a floor vote: a House committee returned it to the Rules Committee, and it was filed on March 6, 2026. [4]
In the 2026 General Session, Grant Amjad Miller was chief sponsor of H.B. 53, Community Rehabilitation Program Amendments. It requires the Purchasing from Persons with Disabilities Advisory Board to give the Government Operations Interim Committee an annual report starting in 2027 and extends the board's sunset date. The governor signed it on March 17, 2026. [5]
Committee and budget responsibilities
Miller's current assignments include House Judiciary, House Economic Development and Workforce Services, and Criminal Justice Appropriations. He also serves on interim committees for judiciary, government operations, and retirement and independent entities. Those roles connect court and justice-agency questions with public spending, workforce policy and institutional administration, adding economic and governmental responsibilities to the defense-law experience described in his professional biography.
