Derek Brown’s legal background includes a degree from Pepperdine Law School and a clerkship for a former chief judge of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He practiced constitutional and appellate law at Mayer Brown and Sidley Austin before his later political and government roles. Brown has also taught communications law as an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University. [1]
Legislative and congressional experience
Before serving as Utah attorney general, Brown worked as legal counsel to U.S. Senators Bob Bennett and Orrin Hatch. He represented House District 49 in the Utah Legislature and later became deputy chief of staff and state director for Senator Mike Lee. His official biography describes more than two decades of combined legal and public-service experience. He lives in Cottonwood Heights. [1]
Student participation in public policy
Brown’s office operates a student advisory council for Utah high-school juniors and seniors. Its published purpose is to give young people experience in civic engagement, public policy and service. Students meet monthly with state leaders and legal professionals and contribute perspectives on matters including social media, substance abuse, youth crime and online safety. Participation includes a community civic-engagement project. [2]
Civic education and legal careers
The council’s structure includes presentations, roundtable discussions and advisory feedback. The office describes mentorship, understanding the legal process and learning about careers in law and government as program goals. Students outside the Salt Lake City area may join meetings virtually. This is an ongoing office program; its published charter and requirements explain how student participation connects to the attorney general’s public-education work. [2]
