Law and community advocacy

Chris Wharton grew up in Salt Lake City’s District 3, earned a history degree at Westminster College and completed law school at the University of Utah. He operates a small legal practice focused on family law, estate planning and LGBTQ+ advocacy. His biography describes pro bono service through civil-liberties, innocence and professional legal organizations, alongside his work as an attorney and business owner. [1]

Elections and council leadership

Wharton was elected to the Salt Lake City Council in 2017 and reelected in 2021 and 2025. He has served as chair and vice chair in multiple years, including chair service in 2020 and 2025. His district includes the Avenues, Capitol Hill, Marmalade, Guadalupe and Federal Heights, combining historic residential neighborhoods with major civic and religious institutions. [1]

Human rights and civic assignments

Before joining the council, Wharton served two terms on the city’s Human Rights Commission and worked on housing and employment nondiscrimination protections. His biography also lists service with the Utah Pride Center and LGBT and Allied Lawyers of Utah. Current council assignments include legislative-policy work, cemetery stewardship and an Olympic Games governing board, extending his civic responsibilities across several institutions. [1]

Recognition of chair service

At the January 13, 2026 meeting, the council recognized Wharton for completing his second term as chair in 2025. The official recap records that acknowledgment as colleagues selected new leadership for 2026. Wharton continues as District 3 representative following his 2025 reelection. [2]
