Business and local-government experience

Aimee Winder Newton graduated from the University of Utah and operated a small business for two decades. Before and alongside county service, her professional experience included work as a planning commissioner, city communications director and energy-company executive. Her county biography connects that background to scrutiny of government spending, economic opportunity and quality-of-life issues in the Salt Lake Valley. [1]

District representation and leadership

Winder Newton began serving on the Salt Lake County Council in 2014. Her District 3 constituency includes communities in the central and western valley. She founded and chairs the county’s Intergenerational Poverty Task Force, bringing together representatives of state government, local governments and school districts. Her listed board work also includes regional planning, behavioral health and business-community organizations. [1]

Chair’s priorities for 2026

Her colleagues selected Winder Newton as council chair for 2026. The county’s announcement identifies criminal-justice reform as a priority she set for that year. As chair, she coordinates with the mayor and other independently elected officials on council meetings and directs the council staff’s day-to-day work. That leadership assignment accompanies her continuing District 3 representation. [2]

State family-policy work

Winder Newton led the Utah Office of Families from its creation in 2022 until a leadership transition in 2026. The governor’s announcement credits her tenure with work on social-media policy and education, home-visiting programs and support for parents and children. Alex Peterson was appointed to succeed her beginning September 8, 2026, making that directorship part of Winder Newton’s prior service. [3]
