Mount Peale rises in the La Sal Mountains, in San Juan County within the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The Forest Service gives 12,721 feet.

The National Park Service names the La Sals, Henrys and Abajos as ranges formed by magma intruding and lifting older rock. In 1988 the Forest Service set aside the 2,380-acre Mount Peale Research Natural Area for its alpine habitat and subalpine fir forest. The Forest Service says La Sal Pass Road is the usual approach and that, like most La Sal summits, Peale has no built trail to the top. The road has a creek crossing that calls for a higher-clearance vehicle, and the climb usually means loose scree, scrambling and some route-finding, with poor cell coverage.
