Mount Nebo

The southern end of the high Wasatch, above Nephi and Payson.

Mount Nebo is the high point of the southern Wasatch, near Nephi and Payson. Its long summit ridge runs along the Utah–Juab county line. The north summit, about 11,928 feet in the county high points list, is the highest; older Forest Service planning text uses 11,877 feet for the mountain.

The Utah Geological Survey points to the massif as an example of rock layers overturned in Utah's thrust belt, folded by compression and later lifted and eroded. The peak is in Mount Nebo Wilderness, designated in 1984 and managed by the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The Nebo Loop road reaches the area around it. Reaching one summit does not mean reaching the other: Nephi's guide describes the Andrew's Ridge route, about 6.6 miles each way from Bear Canyon Road, as ending at the south peak (11,877 feet), a separate approach from the Monument trailhead to the north summit, and a knife-edge ridge between them that some hikers cross. It notes no water on Andrew's Ridge and snow that often lingers from mid-October into July.
