The Kolob Canyons district is at exit 40 on I-15, 17 miles south of Cedar City and 40 miles north of Zion Canyon. A five-mile scenic drive on the Kolob Canyons Road leads to viewpoints and trailheads. Here narrow, parallel box canyons are cut into the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, with Navajo sandstone peaks and cliff walls up to 2,000 feet.

Every visitor stops at the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center to show a pass or pay the park entrance fee. The canyons are designated wilderness with more than 20 miles of trails; wilderness permits are issued only at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. Groups larger than 12 are limited to the Timber Creek Overlook Trail.

Kolob Canyons is a different place from Kolob Terrace and Kolob Reservoir.
