Following Matthew Lawrence’s Divorce: ‘Feeling Where the Trauma Is Held’
She was trying to figure out her future. Cheryl Burke has been open about her self-improvement efforts since her divorce from Matthew Lawrence.
Burke sparked romance rumors with the Brotherly Love alum after his older brother, Joey Lawrence, competed in Dancing With the Stars season 3. The couple date from 2007 to 2008 before rekindling their romance in 2017.
Us Weekly confirmed that Burke file for divorce from Lawrence in February 2022 after nearly three years of marriage. According to legal documents from Us, the professional dancer cited “irreconcilable differences” like the reason for the breakup and listed January 7 as their separation date.
“I know I’ve always said I am an open book with you dudes, I do strive to be, also in writing this I’ve realized there really isn’t an easy way to declare that my marriage is ending,” the ABC personality wrote on Instagram. I hope you understand that I will not be commenting further and respectfully request your account and privacy. Thank you very much.

At the time, a source told Us solely that the divorce was “not about the kids,” add, “Cheryl’s taking this time to focus on next steps and her mental health.”
Matthew, who has not publicly comment on the split, previously discussed the couple’s plans to become parents. “We’re just waiting to see what ensues because I think we were going to move, that upcoming journey,” he told Us in April 2020. “However, everything is currently on hold. When this clears up, I believe we’ll have a better perspective or understanding.”
The Melissa & Joey alum also mentioned how “constant communication” aided his marriage’s success. “When you stop communicating and don’t try every day, that’s when things start to fall apart,” the Pennsylvania native added. “I believe that is extremely important.”
